Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (VOSH)
The Force for Good Foundation donated $8,345 to Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (VOSH). This donation was made in conjunction with Team Pharmanex, the winning team of the Brazil 2000 ELF Authentic Adventure, a 525-mile adventure race through northeast Brazil in April 2000. Before the race, Team Pharmanex joined VOSH to perform optometric services in an extremely low-income population in Sao Luis, Brazil. Because of the donation, 410 patients were examined, 325 pairs of eyeglasses were handed out, and $4,000 worth of medication was dispensed and donated. In November 2001, the Foundation approved an additional contribution of $12,000 to help the organization construct an examination room at the Pescatore Eye and Medical Specialty Hospital in Guatemala.
Wheelchair Foundation
In June 2001 the NSE Force for Good Foundation made a $3,000 grant to the Wheelchair Foundation. The Foundation provides wheelchairs to disabled persons in developing countries. An estimated 20-25 million disabled people worldwide need wheelchairs, though less than 1 percent own or have access to one. The wheelchairs provided by the Wheelchair Foundation are selected to withstand the rugged conditions of developing countries. They cost $150 each and are offered free to those most in need. The company's donation was made to a Florida Rotary Club which matched the donation, dollar-for-dollar. The $6,000 was then given to Rotary International which matched that amount, making the contribution $12,000. They sent it on to the Wheelchair Foundation which again matched the amount, bringing the total donation to $24,000.
World Vision Malaysia-New Covenant Community Center (Sentul, Malaysia)
More children in Sentul, a northern urban area of Kuala Lumpur, will have a place to learn and develop due in part to a US$10,000 grant from the Nu Skin Force for Good Foundation in April 2003. New Covenant Community Center in Sentul consists of a learning center and a baby stimulation center. The donation will help provide a mini library, including books and other educational supplies, baby cribs, bottles, diapers, first aid kits, cognitive development materials and a new children's learning center. The New Covenant Community focuses on ministering to the urban poor in Sentul by providing non-formal education to needy children and on helping babies develop mentally. Until the donation, 45-70 children learned English and mathematics each day. The new children's learning center will double the number of children that can be accommodated. The donation was made through World Vision Malaysia, an organization that operates numerous projects to help rehabilitate victims of economic poverty, natural catastrophes and war.
