Tsunami Relief Update
Following the devastating effects of the tsunami to hit Southeast Asia last December, the Seacology foundation stepped in to help bring hope and a brighter future to the people. Below provides a summary of the work that's been done at Koh-Muk in Trang Province, Thailand.
- Housing for two widowed families - Two families devastated by the tsunami have been left with nothing, one consisting of 10 family members with two handicapped children. They work day-to-day just to survive with extremely inadequate shelter. Land has been designated and homes have been planned to be built for the two families.
- Mangrove forest restoration - Natives have recognized the impact the Mangrove forest had in saving lives and mitigating the devastation from the tsunami in many areas along the cost of Thailand. Although the Mangrove forest prevented more than 70 households from severe destruction, some parts of the forest were damaged. Preparations to restore the damaged forest area are underway.
- Repairing damaged fishing boats - In order to get the people working again, fishing boats have been either replaced or repaired for a number of fishermen. Many more have been helped either through supplies or transportation to retrieve supplies.
- Fishing nets - Materials for making crab nets were purchased for more than 300 fishermen. Other supplies necessary for people to get back to their work have also been provided.
Support will continue to be provided for the people as they continue to rebuild their lives after such a devastating loss.
